75th Anniversary of the Ford Model 40 Celebrated at NHRA Motorsports Museum
Pete & Jake's coupes - two of the most influential hot rods ever built
Think of all of the influential hot rods that have appeared over the years, and a fair number fall into the 33/34 coupe category. For instance, there are the historically significant three-window coupes of Pete Chapouris and Jim ‘Jake’ Jacobs that seemed to grab everyone’s attention when they appeared on the cover of that infamous edition of Rod & Custom magazine, not to mention the ZZ Top Eliminator coupe of rock guitarist Billy F Gibbons, plus many more equally well-known examples.
The Mooneyham & Sharp quarter-mile smoker
As you might have gathered, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the '34 Ford Model 40 body style and the NHRA Wally Parks Motorsports Museum in Pomona is celebrating this fact with the most comprehensive display of influential 33/34 Fords ever assembled. Under one roof in the museum can be found both Pete & Jake’s cars, the Mooneyham & Sharp 554 race coupe from the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, the heavily chopped Pierson Brothers and So Cal Bonneville coupes, Eliminator and the Super Bell coupe. You can see them all together with photographs and artefacts that tell the story of the iconic 1933-’34 Ford.
Eliminator is there too - we can actually lay claim to having driven this car in England on a test track in the '80s.
For a sneak preview of the exhibiton, here’s a few photos of the display taken by UK hot rodder Keith Atkinson during his visit a week or so ago. The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum can be found at 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Building 3A, Gate 1, Pomona, CA 91768 http://museum.nhra.com/ and the exhibition runs through to the end of June 2009.
